June 21st, 2018
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Tearing through the pouring Tennessee rain, Gage Hecht crossed the finish line in Oak Ridge with a result to rival his other excellent finishes in the past. The 20-year-old clocked a time of 41:46 that was good enough to withstand the final wave of 10 riders, most of whom belonged to World Tour teams.
“Today well surpassed my expectations,” Hecht said. “I came in with a goal of finishing top 15, so I was shocked that my time stood to finish in fifth. I am so thankful for the opportunity and the result. I want to thank everyone for the help and support.”
Hecht finished two minutes back on eventual winner and defending champion, Joey Rosskopf (BMC Racing).
On the 34.5km flat and fast course with multiple turn arounds, The next fastest time on the team came from Tyler Stites, who claimed 20thplace with a time of 3:49.
Canadian National Time Trial Championships
Riding solo at the Canadian National Championships, Laurent Gervais finished his 37-km time trial sixth in the U23 field.
“Coming out of Beauce it was important for me to fully rest and recharge the battery before the TT,” he said. Being long and hilly, it was really crucial to manage the effort and overall the legs felt fine. Coming out sixth in the U23 field is okay, I’m satisfied.”
“The road race on Sunday is actually stage 1 of the UCI 2.2 GP of Saguenay, so I know the course pretty well. I think there will be a select group of riders that’ll go to the line and I hope I can make that group and end up with a good result, like a U23 podium. I would be more than happy with that result.”
